২০১৫ সালের শেষের দিকে সোনাদিয়া গভীর মমুদ্রবন্দর নির্মাণ প্রকল্প বাতিল করা হয় । উল্লেখ্য, ভবিষ্যতে পায়রা সমুদ্রবন্দরকে ক্রমান্বয়ে গভীর সমুদ্রবন্দরে রুপান্তরিত করার কথা রয়েছে । তবে ২০১৭ সালে এসে সোনাদিয়া সমুদ্র বন্দর এর পুনঃসম্ভাব্যতার কথা ভবছে সরকারের পরিকল্পনা মন্ত্রণলয় ।
