Let there be 1 litre of the solution after mixing 20% methyl alcohol and 50% methly alcohol If the concentration of methyl alcohol 40%, 4 litres of the resultant mixture is methyl alcohol. Let, X litres of the solution containing 20% methyl alcohol be mixed with (1 - x) litres of the solution containing 50% alcohol to get 1 litre. X litre of 20% = .2x litre of alcohol (1 - x)" " 50% = 50% = .5(1 - x) " Therefore, .2x + .5(1 - x) = .4 litres .2x + .5 - .5x = .4 .5 - .4 = .5x - .2x x = .1.3 = 13 litres And 1 - x = 1 - 13 = 23 litres So the ratio = 13:23 = 1:2
