সুন্দরী গাছ সমুদ্র উপকূলবর্তী এলাকার (সুন্দর বন) কর্দমাক্ত ও লবণাক্ত মাটিতে জন্মায়। মাটি কর্দমাক্ত ও রন্ধ্রবিহীন হওয়ায় ওই মাটিতে অক্সিজেন সরবরাহ খুব কম । এছাড়াও এসব এলাকা বেশির ভাগ সময়েই জলপ্লাবিত থাকে । মাটিতে প্রচুর পরিমাণে অজৈব লবণ দ্রবীভুত অবস্থায় থাকে, তাই উদ্ভিদের কিছু শাখা - মূল অভিকর্ষের বিপরীত দিকে ধাবিত হয়ে মাটির উপরে উঠে আসে । এইসব মূলের উপরিভাগে অসংখ্য সূক্ষ্ম শ্বাস ছিদ্র বা ‘নিউম্যাটোফোর’ থাকে। এই ছিদ্রের মাধ্যমে মূলগুলি বায়ুমন্ডল থেকে অক্সিজেন শোষণ করে । এই রকম মূলকে শ্বাসমূল বলে ।
