বাংলাদেশের বৃহত্তম তাপবিদ্যুৎ ভেড়ামারায় অবস্থিত।ভেড়ামারা তাপ বিদ্যুৎ কেন্দ্র থেকে প্রথম বিদ্যুৎ উৎপাদন শুরু হয় ১৯৭৬ সালে। তখন দুটি ইউনিট থেকে মোট ৪০ মেগাওয়াট বিদ্যুৎ উৎপাদন করা হতো। প্রতিটি প্ল্যান্টের বিদ্যুৎ উৎপাদন ক্ষমতা ছিলো ২০ মেগাওয়াট।চাহিদার সাথে সঙ্গতি রেখে ১৯৮০ সালে আরো একটি প্ল্যান্ট এখানে নির্মাণ করা হয় যার বিদ্যুৎ উৎপাদন ক্ষমতা ৬০ মেগাওয়াট। দেশের দক্ষিণ - পশ্চিমাঞ্চল ছাড়াও উত্তরাঞ্চলে সীমাহীন লোডশেডিং ও বিদ্যুতের ঘাটতি কাটিয়ে ওঠার ক্ষেত্রে এই বিদ্যুৎ কেন্দ্রটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা পালন করতে থাকে।২০১০ সালের দিকে ১টি ইউনিট থেকে বিদ্যুৎ উৎপাদন একদমই বন্ধ হয়ে যায়। বাকি দুইটি ইউনিট থেকে ৩০ মেগাওয়াট বিদ্যুৎ উৎপাদন করা সম্ভব হয়।
