According to Jain scriptures,
Vardhaman Mahavira, the 24th and last
Tirthankara founded Jainism as a faith in the 5th
or 6th century B.C. The religion derives its name
from the jinas ("conquerors"), a title given to
twenty-four great teachers (Tirthankara through
whom their faith was revealed.
