There is uncertainty about the
location of the early capital of the Rashtrakutas.
However, since most of the Rashtrakuta
monuments are found at Ellora (Ilapura), with
nothing correspondence at Malkhed
(Manakhet), it has been suggested that the early
Rashtrakuta capital was located in the vicinity of
the Ellora caves in the time of Dantidurga who
was the founder and first ruler of the dynasty.
Later, Amoghavarsha I made Manyakhet his
capital that remained the Rashtrakutas' regal
capital until the end of the empire.
