Its first documented use in human history dates back to the 6th century AD, in early medieval China. During the Ming dynasty in 1393 an annual supply of 720,000 units were produced for the general use of the imperial court at the capital of Nanjing. For the imperial family alone, there were 15,000 units made, each perfumed. In more recent times, its availability, or the lack of it, has been the subject of much consternation worldwide. What?
